Who is Saint Louis de Montfort and What is Montfort Spirituality?

St. Louis de Montfort upon his death was known as The Apostle of the Cross and the Apostle of the Holy Rosary. However, in modern times, he is known as the Apostle of Total Consecration and Apostle of Marian Spirituality. The Spirituality of St. Louis de Montfort – in Jesus Through Mary – is one of Christianity’s most precious and best-kept secrets.

St. Louis de Montfort presents a spirit of Consecration to God … through His Mother – as Mother of God. Mary is Mother of the total human family, each person, and all of creation. It is she who St. Louis de Montfort says will bring us together from all nations. For Montfort, she is the first and last way to God: the accomplisher of her Son’s Incarnation and work of salvation. It is she who wins through humanity what has been lost through pride. In the words of Montfort “she is the masterpiece of grace on earth … the way He will come to us a second time … mercy, power and grace … who will crush the head of Satin … the sure, direct and immaculate way … to Incarnate Wisdom … to the Blessed Trinity.”

Saint John Paul II calls his encounter with Montfort Spirituality “the decisive turning point” in his life. He terms it, “indispensable to anyone who means to give himself without reserve to Christ”. It is, he says, “a new attitude springing from the depths of my faith, as though from the very heart of the Trinity and Jesus Christ. … It is the best known means of participating fruitfully and effectively in this reality.”

Mother Teresa of Calcutta in a … letter to the Holy Father recommended, “that the Cause of St. Louis de Montfort may soon be advanced, and that he may soon be counted among the doctors of the Church … all for Jesus through Mary.”

About St. Louis de Montfort

St. Louis de Montfort (1673-1716) was beatified by the Roman Catholic Church in 1888 and canonized in 1947. He emerged from … the tiny village of Montfort, France. The Jesuits and the Sulpicians prepared Louis Marie for his brief sixteen-year priesthood as a vagabond preacher. … The father from Montfort served the poor, the sick, disabled, dispossessed, and illiterate of France as the pope’s “Apostolic Missionary” until his death. He inspired the founding of three congregations – the Company of Mary (Montfort Missionaries), the Daughters of Wisdom, and the Brothers of St. Gabriel. His charism is today inspiring a growing worldwide movement of Total Consecration to God Alone through the Blessed Mother.

St. Louis de Montfort’s Writings

There are three primary literary sources of St. Louis de Montfort: The first is The Writings of St. Louis de Montfort, and include: The Secret of Mary, Treatise of True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, Secret of the Most Holy Rosary, Friends of the Cross and Love of Eternal Wisdom, as well as several other writings and letters.

The second source is The Hymns of St. Louis de Montfort. And the third source is Jesus Living in Mary: The Handbook of the Spirituality of St. Louis e Montfort.

Of course, there are additional resources, including Preparation for Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary (commonly referred to as the Gray Book).

The books and writings may be found on Montfort Publications. Additional spiritual resources (audio, video and articles) are freely available on The Association of Mary, Queen of All Hearts website. See the links elsewhere on this website for more information.

Why is Mary Necessary?

Fr. de Montfort is not content to say Mary is the key, he will go on to say that Our Lady is a Necessity… for Christian living. She is not optional, she is necessary. In other words, you MUST have a relationship with her if you are to live a life as a Christian, to live your life fully alive in Jesus.

Introduction to St. Louis de Montfort and Marian Spirituality

This audio briefly introduces St. Louis Marie de Montfort and also introduces the concept of Total Consecration as outlined by Fr. de Montfort in his writings: The Secret of Mary and the Treatise of True Devotion to Mary.

Introduction Audio: Saint Louis de Montfort and Total Consecration

To be dependent on her, God became man here below,
How could I refuse to follow in His path.
She is the faithful Virgin Whom I must imitate,
Every grace comes through her
To her I must then pray.

What is the Difference Between Consecration and Total Consecration?

In the Catholic Community, many people when they hear the words “Act of Consecration to Our Lady”, they automatically think of St. Louis de Montfort’s approach to consecration, and that is not always the case. In fact St. Louis de Montfort is not the originator of Marian Consecration. That existed even before Fr. de Montfort was born.

But especially since the early 20th Century, there are a number of consecration approaches that exist and that may cause some confusion. It is often explained in the Christian Community that consecration is placing on a cloak to keep one-self safe, or family safe, from the evils in today’s world. That is not Total Consecration.

Devotion to Mary: Transformation of the Heart

Devotion to Mary: Transformation of the Heart. This Conference consists of three sets of audio. The first audio was presented to a split audience in a Maryland parish. Many attendees had made their Act of Total Consecration, and many were about to do so that weekend. The focus of the audio is on the meaning of I Am All Yours … What do these words really mean? They’re part of the Consecration prayer and is often part of the daily prayer said by people following St. Louis de Montfort’s Spirituality. Before discussing this in detail, the conference covers an icon image The Mother of God with Three Hands. It is the story of this icon that is used to further illustrate what I Am All Yours actually means.

Conference #2: Transformation of the Heart It is commonly said that Devotion to Mary and saying the Holy Rosary is for women. Devotion to Mary performed precisely, transforms a man into an Apostolic man. Not just a man who is serious about faith. But a man that is stepping forward in the service of the gospel. An apostolic man. This conference audio talks about St. John, Jesus’ beloved friend and the only Apostle found at the foot of The Cross on Good Friday. The speaker discusses holiness and the characteristics of a saint. He relays the story of how his (St. John’s) mother disrupts Jesus and asks for both her sons (John and James) to sit at each of Jesus’ sides when He comes into His reign. The Bible tells us this and other stories about St. John before Holy Thursday and Easter Sunday. In this audio several Bible stories are relayed to help us all to connect to the Devotion to Mary and the Transformation of our Hearts.

The last audio focuses us on Devotion to Mary. The audio also gives us five “markers”, or guide posts, or milestones to help us with our Devotion and with our Spiritual Prayer Life. This is covered because it is often difficult to find a spiritual director. While this discussion does not replace a spiritual director, it will help each of us on our own Spiritual Journey and in our own Spiritual Prayer Life.

We pray this conference deepens your own Devotion to Mary.

Can I Approach Jesus Directly?

Can I Approach Jesus Directly? Of course you can. But before you do, consider the following. If I am to enter His presence, do I do so in a way that gives Him the most honor or is it the most convenient for me? An interesting questions that will impact our own spiritual prayer life. This is why St. Louis de Montfort says it is essential for us to include Mary in our spiritual life. Because it is the way that honors Jesus the most. The issue is not can I approach Jesus, of course I can. The issue is not can I go to Him. It is when I do go to Him, do I do it in the manner that most honors Him? What is the best way to enter His presence? The more I desire what pleases the Lord, the more I turn my attention to the Lord. Should I go to the Lord by myself? Of course you can. But what way honors Him the most? St. Louis says I desire to honor Him fully. But I do not know how to approach Him with the honor He deserves. Is there a way that honors Him the most? St. Louis de Montfort says yes! How can I learn?

Read more about this issue and then listen to a condensed audio that was first given in a Conference Audio: Praying with the Mother of God.

Approximate time of audio: 49 Minutes
